Solo piano (20’).

The Five Piano Etudes after J.S. Bach explore the music of Bach and its myriad influences on the music of the subsequent three centuries. Each etude draws from a different set of musical elements—such as form, texture, even the function of spirituality in Bach’s music and its latter-day emanations—illustrating and imitating the cosmopolitanism of Bach’s sacred vocal works, cantatas, and solo instrumental suites. The etudes do not simply juxtapose the music of Bach with more contemporary soundworlds, but rather seek a new synthesis of the old and new. The Bach “source materials,” which always appear in modified form, could be said to actively participate in the synthesis.
