Tenor, alto flute, bass clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, percussion, piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass on texts by Octavio Paz (17’30”).
The poetry of Octavio Paz—the richness of its imagery, thickness of its blood and vivid paintings of the surreal–is something that I find myself continuously drawn to. Vaiven, from his collection Salamander, appealed to me in particular because of the sensual beauty of the subject and how Paz leads the reader through this narrative with such a sophisticated variety of emotion and atmosphere.
The poem is divided into six sections and I have followed suit in my setting. Across the six movements, there is a progression from the stillness of twilight to the blaze of the sun at its peak.
